Windows and Doors remain a key design element when considering a building’s comfort level. Glass comprises the largest surface area of a window and therefore it is the major contributor to its performance.
It’s popularity as a building material is growing and our expectation is that code changes are likely to continue to ensure best practice. Recent H1 changes to the Building Code have improved thermal insulation, mostly by reducing U-values required from the glass component of a window.
However, we are starting to see the unintended consequences of overheating in the warmer regions over summer. Overseas information and proven practices suggest G7 as an acceptable solution could be improved.

Guest Speakers
Jason Quinn is an ex NASA engineer who was taken aback by the poor housing quality when he moved to New Zealand. He has a passion for improving home performance, a motivation sparked by his personal experience of renovating his own home. His business ‘’Sustainable Engineering’’ leverages his extensive knowledge and specific modelling data to assist the design community toward better built-in performance when designing homes.
Key learnings
Understanding the effects glass selection has on thermal comfort and solar heat gain, in relation to building types and climate zones – through predictive thermal modelling.
Knowledge of the performance difference between double and triple glazing with coated glass incorporated into the units.
Analysis of the impact on the homeowner when specifying Low E coating onto surface 2 or 3 of a double-glazed unit.
Emily Newmarch is an inspiring young leader who is passionate about driving change globally through sustainable design. Embedded as a Low Carbon Design Specialist at Warren & Mahoney, with a remarkable journey spanning across continents, Emily will share her insights from speaking in the USA, Hong Kong, Italy, and Australia. The ambition of her recent PhD was to explore embodied carbon emissions through a poetic and practical lens to find innovative solutions for New Zealand buildings. She is also an award winner and published author.

Expert Panel Discussion and Questions
Following our guest speakers presentations, we will have an expert panel discussion with questions from the audience. The panels members will include Jason Quinn, Emily Newmarch and Metro's very own Rahul Jain – Technical Specialist for Architectural Glass, with over 25 years of international glass experience.
Rahul Jain - an experienced engineer with over 25 years in the value-added glass field, has worked in key roles at Emirates Glass LLC, DDG Glass in Malaysia, and is currently the head of technical at Metro Glass. He is often sought after by governing bodies for his expert opinion and depth of knowledge in glass internationally. He has a background in quality assurance and process excellence, with a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering, and a Masters in Economics. He is well-prepared to handle challenges in the ever-changing glass industry and share his valuable insights.
