Project Overview

Delivered as a large scale, multi level education facility, the Northcote College Technology Block was designed to support a wide range of specialist learning spaces, including science labs, digital technology rooms, design studios, a library, and student support areas. Across the building, glazing plays a central role in shaping both the learning experience and the architectural identity of the project.

Metro Performance Glass manufactured, supplied, and installed more than 750 digitally printed glass panels throughout the façade and atrium spaces. The glazing design introduces natural light deep into the building while helping manage glare and solar performance - creating bright, comfortable environments suited to modern education spaces. Large glazed atrium areas also enhance visual connectivity between levels, reinforcing the building’s open and collaborative feel.

Digitally printed glazing adds texture, rhythm, and depth to the exterior, transforming the façade into a dynamic architectural feature while maintaining the durability and performance required for a high use school environment.

Unique Project Requirements

The scale and complexity of the glazing package required close coordination across manufacturing and installation teams. More than 750 digitally printed panels of varying sizes were produced across Metro Performance Glass facilities in both Auckland and Christchurch, ensuring programme demands could be met while maintaining consistency in colour, print quality, and visual appearance.

Installation within the atrium spaces presented additional challenges, with restricted access requiring specialist lifting equipment, electric winches, and carefully staged installation sequencing. Large format panels also demanded precise coordination with the aluminium framing systems to ensure smooth integration throughout the multi-level structure.

The result is a technically robust and visually engaging glazing solution that supports the building’s long-term performance while contributing to a contemporary educational environment designed for future generations.
