From inception in 1987, explore our history
From inception as Metropolitan Glass & Glazing in 1987 to becoming a leader in providing high-performance glass solutions and exceptional service to Australia and New Zealand, explore our 37 year journey below.
1987
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN.
Founded by three visionary entrepreneurs driven by their passion for glass and committed to providing customers with the highest quality products available, we were known as Metropolitan Glass and Glazing way back then.
1990's
LEADING THE WAY IN GLASS TECHNOLOGY.
Metro Glass introduced 1st generation Low E glass
using hardcoat technology, revolutionising thermal
performance of glass. We commissioned double glazing production
lines throughout our North Island plants,
well before it was mandated.
2000's
TAKING PERFORMANCE TO
THE NEXT LEVEL.
Metro Glass were the first to introduce 2nd
generation Low E glass in New Zealand.
This soft coat technology transformed thermal
performance, with virtually invisible coatings. The H1 building code changes in 2009
effectively made it mandatory to use
double glazing in all new builds.
2010's
GETTING SERIOUS ABOUT SUSTAINABILITY.
Metro Glass began recycling waste glass from all our plants,
stopping it from going into landfill. We also began auditing our glass material suppliers annually including
their sustainability and corporate social responsibility policies.
2020's
OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED.
The first glass company in New Zealand to attain Declare Label (Red List Free) certification.
Recycling 99% of all our waste glass through our partnership
with glass recycling company 5R Solutions.Became Toitu Envirocare Carbon Reduce Certified.
Further H1 building code changes came into effect
to improve home thermal efficiency, meaning Low E
glass effectively became mandatory.
Proud of our achievements to date
We recycle 99% of our waste glass.
We proudly recycle 99% of the waste glass generated by our plants, right here in New Zealand, thanks to our partnership with 5R Solutions a leading kiwi glass recycling company. The recycled glass finds new life in various products, including home insulation and glass bottles.
What our glass is made up of.
The glass products we sell contain an average of 22% recycled content. Our double and triple glazing glass is Declare Label certified as Red List Free, meaning they contain no toxic ingredients.
Environmental Impact.
We have EPD's available for all of the glass materials that make up our core products. They tell a product’s life story from sourcing to gate, and their impact on the environment.
Our Low E glass enhances energy efficiency by reducing the energy needed to heat and cool your home. This not only increases living comfort but also contributes to a more sustainable future.
What is Declare?
Declare labels play a similar role as nutritional labels for food, however they are for building products and show what products are made up of and that they are free of any nasty ingredients.
Declare labels list products that are free of Red list chemicals. Since launching in 2012, Declare has positively changed the materials marketplace by offering simplicity and ease of use to both manufacturers and specifiers to enable a future of healthier buildings.
