High Performance Glass for Auckland’s New Electric Ferry

Metro Performance Glass was proud to supply the specialist glazing for Auckland Transport’s new electric ferry - a landmark project that’s helping shape the city’s move toward sustainable public transport.

Project Overview

Supplying glazing for a marine environment comes with unique challenges. Each panel needs to handle the unique challenges of life at sea, from salt air and constant vibration, to sudden changes in weather. To meet these demands, the glass was designed to comply with the ISO 21005 international standard, which sets strict requirements for thermally toughened marine vision panels.

Unique Project Requirements

All glazing was manufactured at Metro Performance Glass’s Christchurch facility, which has been ISO 21005 accredited since 2019. Each panel was produced to precise project specifications, using grey toughened safety glass with a digitally printed black edgeband for added durability and a clean, modern finish. The grey tint was chosen to reduce glare from the sun reflecting off the water, while still delivering excellent clarity, allowing passengers to sit back, relax and enjoy the view whatever the conditions.

Built at the Q-West boatbuilding yard in Whanganui. They have been designed by Incat Crowther and include HamiltonJet propulsion, energy storage systems and electrical integration.
