For this Wānaka retreat, Johnston Architects crafted a home that balances precision, comfort and connection to the landscape. The broad U shaped design gathers the site, framing courtyards, terraces, and outdoor living spaces while providing privacy for the master suite and flexibility for visiting family.

Central to the home’s performance and comfort is Metro Glass’ Therma Light™ Triple glazing. Large floor to ceiling panels brings in light and stunning views, while ensuring superior thermal efficiency. The indoor pool, fully enclosed in high performance glazing, remains condensation free year round, and sliding panels seamlessly merge indoor and outdoor spaces in summer.

Every element reflects a careful attention to materials and craftsmanship. Local schist anchors the form to the alpine landscape, while warm, varied cedar cladding extends inside, concealing storage and layering timber with soft stone tones. Large format tiles continue from interior to exterior, maintaining visual continuity throughout.

By combining architectural precision with high performance triple glazing, this retreat delivers a luminous, comfortable, and enduring home - one where light, landscape and lifestyle are perfectly in balance.
